Explain why you are using the picker

A random name picker can help more students take part, but it should not feel like a trap. Tell the class what will happen after a name appears. Give students enough thinking time and allow a simple pass rule when the topic is sensitive.

Pick a student for a question

Add one student per line in the Random Name Picker. Ask the question first, pause so everyone can think, and then pick a name. This keeps the whole class involved instead of making one student think alone.

Remove a picked name when every student should have one turn before the list resets. Keep names in the pool when each question should be a fresh draw.

Assign classroom jobs

Make a list of students who are ready for a job. Pick names for tasks such as passing papers, leading a line, checking supplies, or sharing a summary. Rotate the eligible list over time so the same students are not always chosen.

Create speaking or presentation order

When everyone needs a place, use the Random Order Generator instead of picking one name at a time. Share the complete order at the start. Students can prepare because they know when their turn will come.

Protect student privacy

Use first names, initials, or class numbers. Do not enter grades, behavior notes, medical facts, or other private details. The tool works in the browser, but using less personal data is still a good habit.

Know when not to randomize

Random choice is not right for every classroom task. Do not randomize support, access needs, discipline, or anything that should depend on a student's learning plan. Use teacher judgment for those choices.

For larger activities, read how to make random groups or open the Random Team Generator.
