Start with the job, not the animation

A wheel and a name picker can both choose from a list. The best tool is the one that makes your rule easiest to understand. Think about the size of the list, the number of winners, and what should happen after each choice.

Use a wheel for a shared reveal

Spin the Wheel works well on a classroom screen, at a meeting, or during a live giveaway. People can see the choices and follow the reveal. Elimination mode is useful when a selected choice should leave the wheel.

Weights let one choice have a larger chance. That can be useful, but it is not an equal-chance draw. Tell the group when weights are turned on.

Use a name picker for a direct draw

The Random Name Picker is faster when you only need one or several names. It is also easier to use with a long roster because the result does not depend on fitting every label around a wheel.

Choose no-repeat mode when each person should be picked at most once. Remove winners only when that rule was agreed on before the draw.

Use a list randomizer for a complete order

A picker answers “who is next?” A List Randomizer answers “what is the full order?” Use it for presentations, task queues, playlists, and draft order. Everyone receives a position in one shuffle.

A quick choice guide

  • Choose a wheel for a large visual reveal.
  • Choose a name picker for one or more direct winners.
  • Choose a list randomizer when every entry needs a position.
  • Choose a team generator when the output must be several groups.

No tool can fix a bad list. Check missing names and duplicates first. Then read the fair random draw checklist before a draw that matters to a group.
