Simple Random Sampling: A Practical Checklist
Use this short checklist to select an unbiased sample from a spreadsheet, survey list or QA dataset.

Define the population
The population is the complete set from which the sample is drawn. Missing records cannot be selected, so check that the source includes every eligible row and excludes ineligible rows.
Give each row one chance
Use one line per unit. Remove duplicated rows unless duplicates represent genuinely separate units. Keep a stable identifier so a selected record can be traced back to the source.
Choose the sample size before drawing
Changing the size after seeing results can introduce judgment into the process. Record the planned count or percentage, then run one draw without replacement.
Save the evidence you need
For informal work, copying the selected IDs may be enough. Audited or scientific studies may require a documented seed, versioned source data and a reproducible statistical package.
For everyday checks, paste rows into the Random Sample Generator. When you only need non-repeating integers, use the Unique Random Number Generator.
